The NSHS boys and girls basketball teams held their annual Boomshakalaka this past week where both teams were introduced and players showed off their skills.
Girls coach Lexa Larsen said she has twenty girls on the team, but most are young. Alyssa Rosquist is their only senior; She is also their best player and leader. The Lady Wolves have three juniors: Megan Mecham, Saige Jensen, and Bryar Shaw, and three sophomores who played a lot of varsity last year: Mikah Roper, AnnaLyne James, and Zoey Rhees.
“We have a lot of experience returning, and it has showed in our first two weeks of practice,” said Larsen. “As long as we can stick together through the ups and downs of the season, we should be able to win more games than last year and hopefully qualify for the state tournament. Our strengths will be our speed and hustle. We’re hoping to improve our shooting this season as well as our defense. We have a bunch of home games in December, so hopefully we can get a lot of people out to see us play.”
The Lady Wolves traveled to Intermountain Christian on Friday and beat the Lions 48-39 with Alyssa Rosquist scoring 24, Megan Mecham 16, and Saige Jensen 5. The Lady Wolves traveled to Draper APA on Saturday and lost 18-73. Mecham led in scoring with 6 and Rosquist, Jensen, Mikah Roper, Zoey Rhees, and Hannah Johnson each had 2. This week they travel to Millard, then they are in Parowan on December 3 and host Bryce Valley on December 10.
Kody Shepherd, boys coach, said his team’s seniors include Bron Butler, Quinn Cowan, Efrain Bernadino, Mason Pierce, Brayden Hammond, and Rylan Frischknecht, and with this leadership, they’re excited for the upcoming season.
“We have a lot of experience coming back and have a good core group and great role players,” said Shepherd. “I believe we have excellent talent, and our biggest thing will be how we can mesh as a team on and off the court.”
Assistant coaches for the Wolves are Kenny Shepherd, JD Anderosn, Tyrell Harrison, and Jeff Harrison.
