Countdown to the 2024 General Legislative Session

We’re just one week away from the upcoming Legislative Session, which begins Tuesday, Jan. 16. I have been working diligently alongside my colleagues to identify solutions to the problems facing our state. I look forward to passing meaningful legislation to address these needs.

Committee meetings and floor time alike are open to the public and I would love to see you in person at the Capitol. If you’re unable to make the drive, you can also participate in person or online at le.utah.gov. Daily schedules and agendas can be found online as well. Testifying in person or on-line makes a real difference on critical bills affecting Rural Utah.

Happy New Year

This past holiday season, I was reminded of what a privilege it is to serve my constituents. I am grateful to live in an area that truly reflects the spirit of giving, not only during the holiday season, but all year long. Wishing you all a happy and fruitful New Year.

Success Sequence

Did you know there is a specific pattern of life events that can set the next generation of Utahns up for success? Research shows 97% of people who follow this so-called “success sequence” won’t fall below the poverty line in their lifetime.

The sequence calls for three simple steps: First, young people need to graduate from high school. Next, they need to find full-time employment. Finally, they should marry before having children.

You can learn more about the success sequence from the Deseret News at https://www.deseret.com/utah/2023/12/28/24007994/following-this-success-sequence-can-help-young-people-become-successful-adults.

Utah Establishes Free Speech Principles for Higher Education

Across the country, confidence in higher-education has fallen to an all-time low according to a recent Gallup Poll, as many once-great bastions of free speech have devolved into highly political institutions. Utah won’t have it.

In December, the Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously approved a resolution to protect and cultivate free speech.

Among other things, the resolution calls on our universities and colleges to maintain institutional neutrality on contentious political and social issues while promoting a culture of free expression and diversity of thought.

The Utah House Majority stands in support of the resolution and other efforts to strengthen one of the fundamental missions of higher education: promoting “the exchange of knowledge and ideas through teaching, research, critical evaluation, civil discourse, and debate.”

We’re proud of Utah’s strong higher-education institutions. By establishing foundational principles of free speech, they’ll remain strong. You can read the entire resolution at: https://ushe.edu/wp-content/uploads/pdf/agendas/2023/20231130-121/Resolution_Establishing_Expectations_for_Implementing_Principles_of_Free_Expression_on_Campus.pdf
