SOCIETY OBIT Probert

Richard Probert

Richard “Dick” Peterson Probert, age 95, passed away peacefully at home on September 17, 2021. Dick was born on August 17, 1926, in Scipio, UT, to Samuel Don and Genevieve Alice Peterson Probert. He was the third of five children.

Growing up, his siblings Arlene, Byron (Bud), Carl and Elaine were his best friends. He was a lifelong cattleman and rancher. He followed the pattern set by his rancher father, operating Probert Brothers Ranches with his two brothers as a fifth-generation rancher.
He married Thelma May Harding of Aurora on September 26, 1946. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti Temple on April 30, 1955. They have three children, Jeaneen, Richard H., and Penny.

He was elected President of the Cattlemens Association in 1985 as well as awarded Cattleman of the Year and Farmer of the Year. He also served on the U.S. Beef Council. These positions allowed him to travel abroad and meet many senators, presidents, and dignitaries. He also served as a member of the Scipio Town Council and President of the Round Valley Riding Club.

He was notorious for his humor, singing, and laughter and famous for his stetson hats and sourdough biscuits. He was the absolute life of the party, and people from all walks of life were drawn to him. He never went anywhere without bumping into someone he knew or making a new friend.

He was an avid baseball fan and loved to cheer on the Utah Jazz.

Dick was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was lovingly referred to as “Pa Dick” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved visits from grandchildren and always wanted to know what they were doing.

In his own words “It has been a good life and I am happy for the good times and the good friends I have made along the way. I’m not going to quit until I can’t get on a horse.”

He is survived by his wife, Thelma and his three children; Jeaneen Probert, Richard H. (GeorgeAnn), and Penny (Blair) Simmons; 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings.
