Local Leaders Honored at WPRA Star Celebration Awards

Outstanding leadership from Sevier County was recognized on a national stage on December 4, when the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) hosted its 2025 Star Celebration Awards at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The WPRA, founded in 1948, is the premier organization for women’s professional rodeo athletes, promoting women’s roles in rodeo and sanctioning events such as barrel racing and breakaway roping at the highest level.

This year’s ceremony honored the teamwork and dedication behind the successful Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA)/WPRA Calgary Qualifier for the Calgary Stampede, held in April at the Blackhawk Arena in Salina. The event was organized by Julie Herman and brought record participation and attendance, delivering a significant boost to the local economy. More than 130 RV sites and 120 hotel rooms were filled, along with strong in-person and online spectator turnout.

Herman worked closely with Jake Van, manager of Salina City’s Blackhawk Arena since 2021. The Blackhawk Arena is a multipurpose equestrian and event facility featuring indoor and outdoor arenas, a round pen, and accommodations for rodeo practice, open riding, and concerts. Under Van’s leadership, the arena has become a trusted venue for high-profile rodeo events and professional competitions.

Impressed by his leadership and attention to detail, Herman nominated Van for the Outstanding Service and Dedication Award, recognizing his exceptional commitment to the success of the Calgary Qualifier as well as multiple PRCA rodeos. Van was also acknowledged for his role in implementing new ground-safety standards at the arena, enhancing conditions for athletes and livestock alike.

Van’s work is supported by strong partnerships across the region. He has collaborated extensively with Salina City, the Sevier County Travel Council, and the Sevier County Commission to advance a transparent and effective tourism and events program that benefits the entire county.

That collaborative effort was also honored at the ceremony, as Sevier County Tourism Director Amy Myers received the Distinguished Partner Award on behalf of Sevier County, recognizing the county’s ongoing support of rodeo, tourism, and major sporting events.

“We are honored to be partners with the WPRA,” said Myers. “Our community loves this world, and we are proud to support it. We couldn’t do it without Jake. He is amazing and makes us look good.”

The recognition highlights the impact of local leadership, collaboration, and dedication in positioning Sevier County as a respected destination in the professional rodeo and tourism world.
