Debate places first in region; third at state

The NSHS hosted region debate this past week and took first place. “We won region!” said Coach Tara Johnson. “We competed against Gunnison, Grand, and North Summitt.” Placing in the top three for North Sevier and their categories include: Combined Extemp 1st Cameron Wahlquist, and 2nd Tianna Easterday; Combined Interp: 2nd Brittania Summarell, 3rd Claire Dahlsrud; Impromptu: 1st Raiden Johnson, 2nd Addie Quarnberg; Original Oratory: 1st Gracey Lambertsen, 2nd Cole Johnson, 3rd Po Ogden; Public Forum 1st Gracey Lambertsen and Tianna Easterday; and Spar 1st Caden Johnson, 2nd Kade Johnson.         “It’s been a really great season, and these kids have worked really, really hard,” said Johnson. State was a 2 day event held at Gunnison high school. There were 10 schools that competed, and 107 students that participated. North Sevier High School took 3rd place overall, missing out on 2nd place by 5 points. However, we had 4 individual state champions in 3 different events, which was the most from any of the schools that participated.

In combined Interp Brittania Summarell took 2nd place overall. Claire Dahlsrud tied for 3rd.

In Extemporaneous Speaking Tianna Easterday is a state champion placing 1st! Caden Johnson brought home a 3rd place medal in the same category. Cameron Wahlquist also made it to the finals round in this event, meaning that in a finals of 6 students, North Sevier had 3 of those places.

In Public Forum team debate, Gracey Lambertsen and Tianna Easterday are the state champions!

In Spar (Spontaneous Argumentation) Caden Johnson is the 2A state champion! Kade Johnson tied for 3rd place, and Elian Jacobo-Aguilar broke into quarterfinals

Students who participated at state are: Brittania Summarell, Claire Dahlsrud, Juliana Chaston, Bo Chapman, Tianna Easterday, Caden Johnson, Cameron Wahlquist, Peyton Bailey, Raiden Johnson, Kade Johnson, Stella Larsen, Gracey Lambertsen, Kapono Ogden, Will Chaston, Cole Johnson, Elian Jacobo-Aguilar, Tierra Easterday. Coaches: Tarah Johnson, Jaylynn Johnson, and Janene Torgersen

It was a brutal 2 days, and lots of emotions were felt, but for the 6 seniors who were part of the beginning of this program 4 years ago, it was incredible to see this program grow and develop to where it is now. These seniors will be missed, but we are excited to welcome in new freshmen next year to continue our program.
